Pentridge Prison Interpretive Plan & Implementation
Client: Shayher Group
Location: Coburg, VIC
Completed: July 2025
Convergence was engaged to deliver an Interpretive Plan and series of interpretive elements as a response to the requirements in the Heritage Permit for the new residential development within Pentridge.
Our team proposed four interpretive signs that follow the visitor as they approach A Division from the Champ St gate, located facing the relevant heritage elements. Each include lighting, written content and evocative images. Selected themes were Female Prisoners, Pentridge Gardens, Warders’ Quarters and Youth at Pentridge.
A quote embbeded in the concrete flooring is located at the Champ St gate threshold to signify the visitor’s entrance to a site of heritage significance.
The design process involved:
Discussions with the stakeholder group to develop a common understanding of project objectives
Review of architectural documentation to ensure alignment with traffic flow, vision and materials
Understanding of current interpretation at other Pentridge sections to create a unified experience
In-depth historical research of the area affected by the development for signage content development and image selection
