Writs to Referendums: Celebrating Australia’s Unique Electoral System

Client: Australian Electoral Commission

Location: Museum of Australian Democracy, Canberra

Completed: 2022

Collaborators: Grumpy Sailor, Lightwell, E2, CK Architecture

Our regular associate, Dr Deborah Rechter, worked under Convergence Design’s banner as lead curator, directing the curatorial and creative vision for this innovative exhibition about the electoral system. The forward-looking exhibition at Old Parliament House, Canberra, explains Australia’s unique electoral system, voting protocols and electoral history. It emphasises the AEC’s accuracy, transparency and accessibility through clever design and engaging content delivery methods. The project uses cutting-edge immersive and interactive digital technology to give visitors a unique, educational, and engaging experience. Object displays, historical timelines, infographics, and interactive touch-tables meet the needs of alternative learning styles.  Developed in collaboration with the client, Australian Electoral Commission, designers CK Architecture and E2 experience design, and media designers Lightwell and Grumpy Sailor in the challenging context of a heritage building.
