Golden Dragon Museum Interpretive Masterplan
Client: Golden Dragon Museum
Location: Bendigo, VIC
Completed: 2025
The Golden Dragon Museum (GDM), a cornerstone of Bendigo’s cultural and tourism offerings, houses a nationally and internationally significant collection that tells the story of Chinese migration, settlement, and heritage in Australia. The museum preserves cultural treasures like the Imperial Dragon Loong and ceremonial regalia, which embody Bendigo’s rich Chinese-Australian heritage.
Our team was engaged to tackle a series of challenges that limit the museum’s ability to engage contemporary audiences and support financial sustainability. Convergence’s Masterplan proposes a transformative approach to revitalize the museum’s exhibitions and visitor experience.
This masterplan offers a roadmap for transforming GDM into a vibrant cultural hub through the revitalization of core exhibitions, a visitor-centre approach with clear narratives and temporary programs, and considered future-proofing.
The GDM will enhance the presentation of collections through dynamic and engaging narratives, incorporate contemporary interpretive techniques, including multimedia and interactive exhibits, and celebrate and educates visitors about Chinese Australian history and identity.
“The Masterplan provides a road map for how exhibitions can be developed in the future such that they best tell the stories. Utilising the strengths and quality of the 30,000 objects in our Collection, the Plan is a key strategic document, of enormous benefit to the Museum now and into the future.”
